Whiteflies, <\/span>which are <\/span>members of the <\/span><\/span>Aleyrodidae<\/span><\/span> family, are <\/span>one of<\/span> the<\/span> world\u2019s<\/span> most destructive insect pests <\/span>in <\/span>vegetables and ornamental <\/span>crops<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00b9<\/span><\/span> Over<\/span> 1,500 species <\/span>of these <\/span>homopterous insects<\/span>,<\/span> which <\/span>possess<\/span> sucking mouthparts that extract sap from plants<\/span>,<\/span> have been <\/span>identified<\/span>, including <\/span><\/span>Bemisia<\/span> tabaci<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Trialeurodes<\/span> vaporariorum<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> Their feeding habits can inflict considerable harm on <\/span>crops like bean<\/span>s<\/span>, cucumber<\/span>s<\/span>, <\/span>aubergine<\/span>s<\/span>, potato<\/span>es<\/span>,<\/span> ash<\/span> gourds<\/span>, cabbage<\/span>s<\/span>, sweet potato<\/span>es<\/span>, <\/span>lettuce<\/span>s<\/span> and tomato<\/span>es<\/span>.<\/span> The damage caused can <\/span>lead to compromised fruit quality<\/span>,<\/span> bringing<\/span> losses estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars <\/span>every <\/span>year<\/span>.\u00b2<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Whiteflies can transmit over 200 plant viruses, predominantly associated with the Begomovirus, Carlavirus, Crinivirus, Ipomovirus and Torradovirus genera.\u00b3<\/span> All these viruses are directly identified as the main cause of yield losses in crops, ranging from 20% to 100% of total losses, and representing millions of dollars.\u2074<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The extensive utilisation of chemical pesticides has significantly raised widespread resistance to traditional pesticides globally. Overuse of synthetic chemical pesticides also brings severe health risks to users and consumers as well as destroying other non-target organisms.\u2075<\/span><\/p>\n

This pest reproduces throughout the year in areas with warm climates and mild temperatures (especially in regions with mild winters). Therefore, evidence of climate change has increased concern about the greater persistence of this pest and its proliferation in new regions.\u2076<\/span><\/p>\n
