Not all orange oil is the same: formulation is where performance begins

Share on:

Orange oil is widely recognized by growers and agricultural professionals. However, familiarity can create a misleading assumption: that all orange oil-based solutions are the same.

They do not all perform equally. The difference lies not only in the active ingredient itself, but also in the technology and formulation processes that maximize its performance as part of an effective crop protection strategy.

At Rovensa Next, we go beyond the active ingredient. Through our patented Orowet® formulation technology, we unlock the full potential of orange oil to deliver superior performance in the field.

At the heart of this performance is Rovensa Next’s pioneering and flagship orange oil product, created 20 years ago and instrumental in helping establish orange oil as a high-performance solution for pest and disease control. This is why not all orange oil is the same. What makes the difference is formulation, and formulation is where performance begins.

Moving beyond the ingredient

Orange oil is often perceived as a widely available, interchangeable component. However, this overlooks a critical factor: agronomic value is determined by formulation.

Our Orowet® technology enhances how orange oil performs in real field conditions by optimizing:

  • Coverage and spreading.
  • Synergies that maximize treatment performance.
  • Contact with targets.

This means that even when two products contain the same active ingredient, their effectiveness can differ significantly. Formulation determines how well the active ingredient reaches, interacts with and acts on the target.

A multi-target solution: insects, mites and diseases

One of the key advantages of orange-oil formulations is their broad-spectrum efficacy and versatility.

Insecticide and acaricide

Orange oil acts by contact, disrupting the external protective structures of soft-bodied insects and mites. When correctly applied, this mode of action provides:

    • Rapid desiccation through loss of body fluids
    • Immediate reduction of exposed pest populations

This contact mode of action delivers rapid control of a broad range of soft-bodied pests under suitable conditions of use (adequate coverage leading to sufficient exposure of the target pests).

Fungicide

Beyond pest control, the same physical mode of action enables effectiveness against fungal diseases.

Orange oil formulations:

    • Disrupt spore membranes, reducing inoculum and preventing germination.
    • Act on mycelium and external fungal structures.
    • Deliver a knockdown or eradicant effect, preventing further infection.

This functionality positions orange oil as a multi-target contact solution, capable of addressing selected pests and diseases within the same agronomic strategy.

Performance supported by evidence

The value of any crop protection solution ultimately lies in its performance under real field conditions, and in its ability to demonstrate that performance with evidence.

This field experience is reflected in Rovensa Next’s leading orange oil portfolio, with market-pioneering brands such as Prev-Am®, Prev-Gold®, Oroquin® and Orocide®. These solutions bring the same formulation expertise in the shape of practical tools for growers, supporting broad-spectrum crop protection programs across different crops, geographies and agronomic needs.

Orowet®-based orange-oil formulations are supported by an extensive internal trial database, including more than 2,000 efficacy trials across crops, targets and geographies. The results consistently demonstrate that efficacy is not driven simply by the presence of orange oil, but by the formulation quality and the technical expertise required to translate its potential into reliable field performance.

Orange oil 60g/L has consistently demonstrated its value both as a standalone contact solution and as a performance enhancer within crop protection programs across multiple trials performed by independent GEP-certified testing organizations.

For example, in seven GEP trials conducted between 2016 and 2018 on grapevine powdery mildew, the addition of orange oil 60g/L at 0.2L/100L to sulfur applied at the label rate increased average efficacy on leaves from 76.0% to 87.2%. Similarly, the combination improved average efficacy on bunches from 80.8% to 85.6%. These results were obtained following five to seven consecutive applications, considering the final disease severity assessments performed 14 to 41 days after the last treatment. They demonstrated the ability of orange oil 60g/L to strengthen disease control when included in existing crop protection programs.

Additional trial summaries showed similar patterns across different uses. In grapevine downy mildew, orange oil 60g/L used as a standalone treatment at 0.4–0.6L/100L achieved average efficacy of 63.6–75.7% on leaves across 15 GEP trials conducted in 2019–2020, with 8–11 consecutive applications. In insecticidal applications, orange oil 60g/L applied at 0.6L/100L achieved mean efficacy of 60.2% against thrips larvae and adults in bulb vegetables across 14 GEP trials conducted in 2019–2020, with three applications at seven-day intervals.

Together, these examples show that performance is not a generic promise, but the result of effective formulation and appropriate use that translates into robust field results.

This combination of formulation quality and field expertise sets Orowet®-based orange-oil solutions apart. Rovensa Next continuously refines its technical recommendations through ongoing field testing and data generation to help maximize performance under real-world conditions.

Built for modern crop protection programs

Differentiation is not only about what the product contains, but also about how it contributes to effective, sustainable crop protection programs.

Orange oil 60g/L solutions:

  • Support Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Crop Management (ICM) programs.
  • Contribute to resistance management through a non-specific physical mode of action.
  • Enhance tank-mix efficiency and application quality by improving the wetting, spreading and coverage of compatible tank-mix partners.

This contribution is most relevant in tank mixtures with compatible partners where improved spreading, coverage and rapid uptake can support overall treatment performance.

Tank-mix strategies should always be assessed in line with local recommendations, partner product attributes and field conditions.

Sustainability, anchored in performance

Sustainability is often discussed in agriculture, but its impact depends on how it is achieved.

Sustainability is not positioned as a standalone claim in the case of orange oil, but as an outcome of how the product performs in practice:

  • Compatibility with IPM strategies
  • No long-term toxicity after application
  • Contribution to resistance management
  • Potential to support application quality and input optimization when used in evidence-based crop protection programs
  • Effective as a standalone treatment and synergistic when integrated with biological and chemical crop protection solutions.

This keeps sustainability connected to efficacy, correct use and measurable field performance.

From ingredient to engineered solution

The future of crop protection will not be defined by active substances alone, but by how those ingredients are formulated and integrated within increasingly complex sustainable agricultural systems.

Thanks to our Orowet® technology, orange oil becomes more than a well-known active ingredient. It becomes a high-performance, multi-target contact solution designed to deliver reliable results under real farming conditions. Realizing its full potential depends on combining advanced formulation technology with the right application strategy, tailored to the crop, target and field conditions.

Not all orange oil is the same. Formulation is where performance begins.

Orowet®-based orange oil formulations offer growers a practical tool for modern crop protection by combining optimized formulation technology and field evidence. This is the difference between orange oil as an ingredient and orange oil engineered for performance.

The product should be used in accordance with its local label and in line with the recommendations of the local technical team.
